Brazil presidential runoff election

25 October 2026, Sunday
Online Location
Brazil Superior Electoral Court (TSE) Project

⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has scheduled a presidential runoff for Oct. 25, 2026, to be held only if no candidate wins more than 50% of valid votes in the Oct. 4 first round. The date is tentative, as it depends on the first-round result. No specific coins are tied to the event.

What is happening

If no presidential candidate receives more than half of valid votes in the first round, the two highest finishers will contest a second round on Oct. 25. More than 158 million Brazilians are eligible to vote. The first round was set for Oct. 4, with polling from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasília time.

Final pre-election polling pointed toward a runoff. Datafolha's last survey put President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at 45% of valid votes and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro at 42%. A Datafolha runoff test showed Lula at 47% and Bolsonaro at 46%, a statistical tie within the margin of error. Prediction markets such as Polymarket and Kalshi priced a Bolsonaro victory as more likely, but those figures reflect market prices, not voter surveys.

Crypto policy was not a defining issue of the campaign. Bolsonaro's filed government program proposes tax cuts and a regulatory rollback but contains no dedicated entry on cryptocurrency, stablecoins or virtual assets.

Why it matters

The winner will inherit a crypto regulatory framework built largely during Lula's current term. It includes Central Bank rules on virtual-asset service providers and licensing, foreign-exchange rules covering crypto transfers and stablecoin-linked assets, and reporting obligations such as the DeCripto system and the requirement to report self-custody movements of $10,000 or more to Coaf.

A change of president does not by itself cancel existing Central Bank resolutions or reporting rules, and several deadlines continue after the vote: restrictions on dealing with unauthorized providers from Nov. 6, and expanded supervisory data and a 24-hour retention period for certain large transfers from Jan. 1, 2027. For holders and traders in Brazil, the open questions are the future direction of crypto taxation, where a public consultation was postponed during the election period, and whether the next administration keeps, adjusts or replaces the current framework. Chainalysis ranks Brazil first in its 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, so regulatory direction affects a large user base.
