Open USD testnet issuance trials

TBA October 2026, date TBC
Online Location
ETH Open Standard

⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.

Open Standard, the entity behind the institutional stablecoin Open USD, plans to run testnet issuance trials on Ethereum sometime around October 2026, as part of the project's technical implementation phase. The event involves ETH, since Open USD is built natively on the Ethereum blockchain.

What is happening

Open USD is a stablecoin aimed at the institutional sector, backed by a consortium of more than 140 companies, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, BNY, Coinbase and Western Union. The project is managed by Open Standard, an independent entity set up to oversee the token under a decentralized governance model, with a board of directors made up of representatives from the consortium members rather than a single issuer.

According to the source, the consortium's next steps focus on a technical implementation phase that includes testnet issuance trials scheduled for the coming months. These trials are described as a precursor to the broader rollout of Open USD on Ethereum's mainnet, where it is intended to integrate with existing decentralized settlement infrastructure and allow continuous, 24-hour processing of corporate transactions.

The economic design of Open USD differs from typical stablecoin models: profits from reserve assets are to be distributed among ecosystem partners after a management fee is deducted, and participating institutions will reportedly be able to issue and burn the token without fees or volume caps.

Why it matters

For Ethereum, hosting the testnet trials of a stablecoin backed by major payment, banking and crypto infrastructure firms reinforces the network's role in institutional and corporate finance, an area where it already hosts a large share of tokenized U.S. Treasury and real-world-asset activity. A successful testnet phase would be a step toward mainnet deployment of a stablecoin positioned as a potential competitor to established issuers and other institutional proposals.

For holders and traders, the event itself is primarily a technical milestone rather than a market-moving launch. Since the date carries only month-level precision and the status is tentative, the timing of the trials is not confirmed and could shift. Observers may want to watch for official confirmation of the testnet schedule, details on which consortium members participate in the trials, and any subsequent announcements about progress toward mainnet deployment.
