Genesis Bond Bitcoin Staking launch on Stacks

17 September 2026, Thursday
Online Location
STX · BTC Stacks

On September 17, 2026, Stacks activated its Genesis Bond, the first institutional bonding period for Bitcoin Staking on the network, enabling BTC holders to earn BTC-denominated yield while their coins remain on the Bitcoin layer 1. The event involves the coins STX and BTC and marks a milestone for institutional participation in Stacks-based staking.

What is happening

Four institutions - 21Shares, HashKey Cloud, UTXO Management (a subsidiary of Nakamoto Inc.) and Sypher Capital - took part in the Genesis Bond, together bonding approximately 250 BTC. The first weekly reward payments were scheduled for September 17, 2026. Three of the participants, 21Shares, HashKey Cloud and UTXO Management, bonded BTC under self-custody, retaining control of their funds throughout. Sypher Capital instead used liquid staking via StackingDAO, a protocol that bonds STX on behalf of investors and matches it with BTC, giving institutions indirect access without handling the bonding process themselves.

The yield mechanism relies on Proof of Transfer (PoX), active since January 2021, under which Stacks miners send BTC to mine blocks, and that BTC is distributed to bonding participants. According to the sources, PoX has distributed more than 4,200 BTC - over $500 million in value - since its activation, and Genesis Bond participants tap into this same yield stream. There is no counterparty holding the funds and no slashing mechanism; the worst-case outcome described is receiving no rewards, rather than losing the principal.

Fireblocks, a custody platform handling large volumes of institutional digital asset transfers, deepened its integration with Stacks to give institutional clients access to Bitcoin Staking through existing custody and compliance tools. The Genesis Bond is described as the first pillar of a broader three-part Stacks roadmap, which also includes infrastructure scaling and a planned Bitcoin-native financial layer with lending and yield products. The underlying PoX-5 hardfork was executed on July 30, 2026. Registration for a second bonding period, planned for early October 2026 with limited capacity, was reported as already open with several institutions enrolled.

Why it matters

For STX and BTC holders, the Genesis Bond represents a new institutional-grade pathway to earn native BTC yield without moving Bitcoin off its base layer or relying on a custodial counterparty. The participation of established players such as 21Shares, HashKey Cloud and Fireblocks may signal growing institutional interest in Bitcoin-based yield products built on Stacks infrastructure.

For traders and the broader ecosystem, the event is a reference point for how institutional capital engages with Bitcoin Staking and the PoX mechanism, and the upcoming second bonding period may be worth monitoring for signs of continued institutional uptake. This is not financial advice.
