StBTC liquid staked Bitcoin launch

09 October 2026, Friday
Online Location
BTC · STX Stacking DAO

Stacking DAO introduced stBTC, a liquid staked Bitcoin asset, on 2026-10-09. The product is tied to the Stacks network's upcoming Bitcoin Staking release and involves both BTC and STX.

What is happening

Stacking DAO announced stBTC, a liquid staking token designed to let Bitcoin holders earn yield through Stacks' forthcoming Bitcoin Staking release while keeping their capital liquid. Instead of choosing between staking BTC and using it in decentralized finance, holders will be able to do both at once: the underlying Bitcoin is bonded to the Stacks Bitcoin Staking system, while stBTC remains transferable and usable across Stacks DeFi applications such as lending platforms and trading pools.

According to the announcement, stBTC is expected to launch with a base yield around 3% under the protocol's initial parameters. The yield model is built so that, over time, it relies less on initial incentives and more on real economic activity generated across the Stacks network, where fees paid in STX fund miner rewards that flow back into the staker pool. The Stacks network settles activity on Bitcoin via Proof of Transfer and reads Bitcoin's state directly, which the announcement positions as a more Bitcoin-native design than previous wrapped-BTC approaches on other chains.

Stacking DAO, the team behind the launch, has previously operated STX Stacking infrastructure, citing more than two years of operation and over $150 million in peak staked capital across roughly 40,000 stakers. stBTC is described as launching just before the broader Bitcoin Staking release on Stacks, with staking and minting available through Stacking DAO's platform.

Why it matters

For Bitcoin holders, stBTC offers a potential way to earn yield on BTC without fully giving up liquidity, since the resulting token can still be deployed into other Stacks-based protocols. This could expand the amount of Bitcoin capital actively used in on-chain finance, an area the announcement notes remains relatively small compared to the total BTC supply held in custody, ETFs, or treasuries.

For traders and the broader Stacks ecosystem, the launch adds a new entry point for Bitcoin capital into existing DeFi protocols, which could affect liquidity and activity levels on those platforms. As with any new financial product, participants should consider the mechanics of bonding, the stated yield assumptions, and the reliance on the still-upcoming Bitcoin Staking release before drawing conclusions about outcomes.
